Interning at CMLS
CMLS accepts requests for internships, most often from college and law school students.
College Interns
Most internships are unpaid unless a student is eligible for work study financial aid or funding under a special funding source. The internships are under the supervision of a licensed attorney. College interns may help interview client applicants, observe attorneys in court proceedings and help the attorney prepare for court, and do special projects that help advance the work of CMLS.
Law Student Interns
CMLS accepts law students for clerkships from the Minnesota Justice Foundation and work study programs. Sometimes law students have their own funding source and apply for a clerkship with CMLS. Law students are offered the opportunity to work in various substantive areas depending on the needs of the program. Our goal is to provide an experience where a law clerk experiences the range of work in a civil legal services office. This may include, client intake, drafting pleadings, research, and potentially court appearances if a student is qualified under Minnesota’s student practice rules.
